5 Questions with a Maui Expert

January 24th, 2007

Nick Guezen talks about Maui, raw fish and screaming down a volcano

Keawakapu Beach5. Why should travelers choose Maui, though it seems far away?
“Maui’s really not that far anymore, with all the flights that airlines are adding. It’s also a great meeting point if you’re getting family together from all over the country. That said, Hawaii is absolutely worth whatever effort it takes to get there. It’s a US state, so there’s no customs to worry about, all your favorite comfort foods and stores are there, yet it’s this gorgeous tropical place. Hard to beat.”

4. If you had to choose one not-to-miss Maui activity, what would it be?
“Probably a visit to Big Beach, where there are huge waves to play in, volleyball and all kinds of stuff going on. Or driving up Haleakala volcano for sunrise and then biking all the way down. Or the coastline drive to Hana. Sorry, that’s more than one; I couldn’t choose.”

Keawakapu Beach3. What’s Maui’s hands-down best beach for families?
“Keawakapu Beach is great for families with kids. It’s very calm because it’s a bit sheltered and the sand is wide, so there’s lots of room to build sandcastles and play.”
2. What’s the Hawaiian custom that visitors might not want to try, but definitely should?
“Eating poi and poke – that’s taro breadfruit and raw fish – traditionally served at luaus. Some people are turned off by their appearance, but try it at least before making up your mind!”

1. The Maui secret that we shouldn’t give away, but will, is…
“Secret Beach. That’s actually its name. When you get to Poolenalena Beach near Makena, turn right and head through a bit of a path. The beach on the other side is bordered by lava on both sides and looks over Molokini. Sunset weddings happen there sometimes.”

Bonus: What the best bang-for-your-buck villa have?
Garuda and Paradise of the Sea & Sky, I can’t choose. They both have fantastic views and offer great value for your money.”

This Is Our DisclaimerDriving the north coast road between Kahalui and Kapalua is a somewhat treacherous, one lane affair. That said, it’s gorgeous, with swinging bridges, market stands, blow holes and natural pools offering one of a kind pit stops along the way. Just be careful and try to keep your eyes on the road.
