Top 5 Deserted Island HQs

June 4th, 2007

We don’t have villas on deserted islands, per se, though a few that come close. But there are some true absolutely uninhabited, Robinson Crusoe isles that you can visit within a quick boat ride of some of our more popular locations, and they make for great picnics, proposals or other private events. If you need to stay close to the deserted island (in)action, these are our Top 5 HQs…

Short of toting along a tent, sneaking to a sandy cay and hoping you don’t get found out by the authorities, you can never really stay on a deserted island. The Caribbean is full of scrubby little sandbars devoid of life, however, and most are within striking distance of the (slightly) more developed islands where our villas are found. If you’d like to stay a boat-hop away from a buffet of clandestine cays fit for day explores, may we recommend:

Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas
The Pirates of the Caribbean films shot many of their deserted-island scenes in and around the Bahamas, with good reason: the Biminis, the Berry Islands and the kite-tail end of the Abaco chain are all fertile ground for sandy picnics with no one else around. Sea Biscuit Villa (above right) is our preferred HQ.

Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda
Just off Virgin Gorda’s north shore, the whimsically named Prickly Pear Island isn’t 100% empty, but you’ll appreciate its one resident - a beach bar and restaurant famous for its fresh seafood and conch fritters. Spend the rest of the day combing the trails and trolling empty beaches on this National Park. Sea’s Song Villa (above right) is our preferred HQ.

Providenciales, Turks & Caicos
The map of Provo, all stringy and full of holes, looks like someone sent it through a shredder. That’s good news for intrepid explorers, who can spend days wandering its many cays and spits of land and never see them all. Villa Seacliff (left) is our preferred HQ.

St. Barts
This tiny French island in the Leewards may not seem to belong in this list, but the scuba diving is best near the many uninhabited isles that surround it. Chant de la Mer (left) is our preferred HQ.

Puerto Rico Villas Puerto Rico
This US territory is busy, busy, busy, but offshore lies several islands worthy of your down time. Closer to St. Thomas than Puerto Rico, the cays of Culebra are mostly nature reserve territory and are great for hiking and photography. The powder beaches aren’t half bad, either. Casa de Crystal, on Vieques, is our preferred HQ.
